Zuzu had listened to what had been told to her, and she parked her Duel Runner next to the beach.

Getting off it, she released Popplio from her Pokeball and stepped out onto the beach. "Popplio, I know we haven't really connected."

"Ork?" asked Popplio as she stooped down to kneel next to her.

"But you saved me when I was in trouble. And I wanted to ask if you wanted to battle with me, train with me. I want to learn how to grow strong with you, as both friends and feel what you're feeling. You want to get strong too, right? Just like Lana, and Mallow, and all of our friends at school right?"

"Ork ork!" Exclaimed Popplio, clapping her hands.

"Okay! Let's try learning some of our basics then. Rotom?"

From her bag, her Rotom erupted. "The Ultimate Maid appears! What's your bidding?"

"Rotom, can you display Popplio's moveset for me currently?" asked Zuzu. "So I can commit it to memory."

Rotom nodded and displayed it. "Popplio's move set currently is Bubble Beam, Water Gun and Aqua Jet. IT can also create bubbles."

"I remember Lana making bubbles. Let's start with making bubbles. Okay Popplio, make a bunch of bubbles in different sizes." said Zuzu.

Raising her head, Popplio started creating bubbles that started to float into the air. "And when you're done, let's try Aqua Jet to pop those bubbles!"

"Hello there!" calls out another Rotomdex voice.

And their partner finally catches up enough to peer over at who they're greeting and oh... Shay with his shiny Hawlucha looks like he hasn't totally prepared himself for running into Zuzu again, but both his Rotom and bird make up for his slight with their own friendliness.

"Hm." ... Shay clears his throat and tries again. "Good to see you."

"Oh Shay, hello." said Zuzu. She knew he was uncomfortable around her, considering that he was from further down the line and THINGS HAPPENED that she wasn't 100% certain what was going on but it was BAD NEWS BEAR level of bad.

"Are you feeling better after the battles?"

Once he getting his stoic and unaffected expression back up, it shifts just slightly into a more thoughtful look.

"After trying this Pokemon 'trainer' thing for a while, I think it's a decent change of pace," he answers. His bird looks up at him curiously, which only prompts Shay to start petting their head feathers.

One could assume that Shay hasn't exactly spilled any parts of his life story with his singular team member or Rotomdex (yet). Then he inclines his head at the little seal. "Did you find your little partner there recently?"

"Yeah, I had to talk with a friend as well to get the idea behind it but I'm ready to give it a try too." said Zuzu, watching Popplio blow bubbles and try to Aqua Jet it with some success, her Aqua Jet fizzling once or twice.

"Yeah, she came to me during work actually. I met her just shortly after talking with Mr. Kaiba when we discussed my Duel Disk which I lent to him to study, and we rode around on his Blue Eyes White Dragon. Did you know he has a Blue Eyes White Dragon? She's SOOOOO gorgeous!"

Shay raises his eyebrow at there being some other duelist here and with their own dragon. Not that he's overly familiar with the thing by name, but it sounds like a creature he might've heard of before once or twice.

"Huh. I'll keep that in mind."

"Yeah. So anyway, I was here with Popplio, getting used to her skills." said Zuzu, turning to look at Popplio who orked back happily as she blew more bubbles and charged through three at once before faltering. "Keep it up Popplio!"

"I think if we battle, it might actually draw out some of our strength. Sort of bubu-bang, and a zoom feeling. You know?"

"So you're challenging me?"

"Oh how exciting! A friendly battle!" his Rotomdex pops in with.

"Lucha!"

Despite the apparent flatness in Shay's tone in contrast to the rest of his entourage, it's not dismissive either.

"Yeah, I think we are. Popplio?" said Zuzu, as Popplio leaped in front of her with a ork of happiness.

"Popplio wants to battle! We the Ultimate Maid and Rotom will referee!" Exclaimed the Ultimate Maid. "To the KO or submit! No time limit! Begin!"

"All right Shay, here I come! Popplio Bubble Beam!"

Shay nods to his bird and they jump forward. Then the Bubblebeam comes at them and he calls out-

"Let's see what they have first."

Which is interesting, but not going TOO easy on the two as Hawlucha takes the surprisingly hard-hitting attack... not that a single hit like that will put them down and out.

"... Wing Attack!"

"Dodge it, Popplio!" Exclaimed Zuzu as Popplio tried to get out of the way, but the slower land speed of Popplio caused it to move slower, and it was slammed into by the Wing Attack head long.

'She can't move fast on land, which means...!' Thought Zuzu frantically before realizing they were on soft sand. "Popplio, ground yourself and use Aqua Jet!"

Popplio seemed to burn with energy as she grabbed for Hawlucha at that moment with her flippers, blazing with Aqua Jet as she rammed her tail into the soft sand with the force, and grabbed the bigger Pokemon. Normally the force of the movement wouldn't giv her the motion she needed, but with the way she was moving, she was in prime movement for a overhead SUPLEX into the dirt.

Briefly, Shay wonders if suplexing is a popular go-to move around here. "Get out of there!"

And with that order, the bird trills while furiously flaps his wings and quickly slams one down between the motions for a hard point-blank Karate Chop. Someone's really taking after their human teacher.

Everyone. Freaking. Loves. Royal Mask on this island. Everyone.

Karate Chop slams into Popplio as she rolls backwards. Winded and damaged, but still rearing to go. "Bubble Beam!"

Bubble Beam blanketed the area as Popplio strafed the area. "Dive into the water Popplio, get some distance and round around!"

Popplio made for the water as she continued to fire, running for the waters edge.

"Up!" Shay shouts out as a signal for Hawlucha to take flight once more in the air.

And it's exhilarating for the bird. They feel mighty and primed some kind of ultimate technique, emotions driven by instincts that drown out their trainer's order for an Aerial Ace at the escaping seal. Emotions that however don't stop Hawlucha from diving down and slamming into Popplio with instead-

"And here comes a Flying Press! The signature move of all Hawlucha~!"

"Popplio!" Exclaimed Zuzu in alarm as the Flying Press connected. There was a second of impact and Popplio was driven into the water with a tremendous splash. "Popplio..."

"The damage Popplio took...!" Exclaimed the Ultimate Maid, her outputs spinning... "It was cushioned by the water!"

"EH!?"

With a loud orc, Popplio erupted from the water in a headlong wave as it rose out of the water, bursting up out of a wave as it charged headlong with a fully powered Aqua Jet!

Neither Hawlucha nor Shay are prepared for the glowing torpedo that is Zuzu's Popplio and it's a solid impact, right in the torso judging from the hoarse grunt they let out.

Said bird's trainer is remarkably silent and impressed at the little seal at the same time. "Still good to go?" he asks the Hawlucha once they pull themselves back onto their feet after a tumble into the sand.

"Hawwwwrr...!!"

"Tackle them now!" Exclaimed Zuzu, as Popplio launched herself from the water at a dead slide. "Use your Bubblebeam to make a sliding path!"

Firing bubbles in front of herself, Popplio slid forward like a cannonshot at Hawlucha, aiming to slam at full speed at the bird Pokemon.

The moment her Popplio shows itself again isn't an unexpected one this time. Without hesitation, the bird leaps-

"Finish it now, Aerial Ace!" Shay calls out and down the Hawlucha dives, ready to combo into another move right after impact if necessary.

Zuzu's mind raced as the pair charged into one another. We've come so close, that Aerial Ace is going to beat us...!

'Pikachu, Iron Tail!

Wait, could we even... it's impossible, but yet...! I have to take a chance!

"POPPLIO! IRON TAIL!"

"POOOOOOPLIO!" Swinging around in a full arc, Popplio swung it's tail at the apex of it's charge as it glowed a brilliant bright light and it slammed down towards Hawlucha--! Seconds before it would break against the next attack.

Strong winds kick up the sand as stray energy from the colliding Pokemon attacks add to the mess with a burst of smoke. As soon as Shay can see his bird again while they're sent skidding back from the recoil-

"Flying Press!"

And with that, Hawlucha pushes off from the sand with all of their might and looms in the air above, feathers alight with power. And then the bird dives, an all or nothing attack!

"We're not going to lose! Counter with Aqua Jet!" Exclaimed Zuzu as Popplio stood up to face Hawlucha.

Staring up at the diving Pokemon, she coiled her muscles and shot up at the opponent, zooming up, and up, but with a cry, she swerved at the last second as Zuzu gave a second order.

"IRON TAIL!"

With a cry, Popplio whipped her tail around at maximum force, slamming her glowing tail which had been charged with the force of the Aqua Jet right into Hawlucha, to send him spinning headfirst into the dirt!

Headfirst is right. Seconds pass as Hawlucha doesn't twitch a single feather in any sort of attempt to escape from the simultaneously compromising and embarrassing predicament. Shay's Rotom floats over to be extra sure.

"... Hawlucha is unable to battle! Victory goes to Popplio!"

With that confirmed, Shay nods without argument and pulls out Hawlucha's pokeball, recalling his bird back into it.

"I... can't believe I won..." said Zuzu, almost in a daze. As if everything fell into place as Popplio came up to her and leaped into her arms, her smile brightened up as she exclaimed, "We won Popplio, our first battle!"

Popplio orked happily as the pair spun around, laughing in the salt and spray of the waves. "Thank you Popplio, I understand now! I love Pokemon!"

Shay steps up to them and it's a cute sight honestly. He snorts with a rare bit of amusement and even outright smiles a little (a slightly less yet still rare thing) at Zuzu.

"You've got some talent. Both of you."

"Thank you Shay. This was... I think this was the hurdle that I needed to get through. Popplio and I." said Zuzu, looking up at him as she hugged Popplio to her.

"I don't know what our goal is right now. But we will find it. Together. With everyone."
