A - Breakthrough Skill
Anyone with or without the intent to locater Shay will find him in the middle of training on the beach. Sometimes it’s as simple as pitting his party against each other or the occasional wild Pokemon mutually itching for a fight.
Other times as the teen keeps up his training and patrol regime, his Hawlucha is like a mirror version of their trainer as they imitate and spar. Spending more time with the rest of his team is something Shay has to work on, but he can justify extra focus for the avian luchador when they’re the one he’ll be leaning on for an upcoming challenge.
....
...... So, he’s rather disgruntled if it’s a bunch of literally grass green armored soldiers that end up coming up to him, which is an understatement really.
"What do you want?"
"By the authority of Overwatch, all items of Fallers tech and research are being confiscated!" Speaks one, before they pull out an index card from somewhere- just to be able to continue their spiel. "And there’s evidence that you, Shay Obsidian, have a suspicious item! A… ‘Duel Disk’ to be exact!:
To this, the teen mutters to himself about not having time for this already nonsense (on so many levels) attempt at martial law. "And what if I said I don’t know what you’re talking about?"
"Then you’ll be searched and taken into custody!"
And you know what, Shay thinks he’s fine with a bit more of a challenge for himself than a Pokemon that has to hold back their power and strength against him, as he meanwhile examines from relatively afar the equipment and dented armor.
“Right.” Shay pulls out the aforementioned duel disk from his (brand new) coat and holds it up for just a moment. “Come get it.”
The soldiers look at each other, then one bumps a different one to go and fetch the thing. But of course, by the time that happens, Shay lightly tosses over to his Hawlucha and in another swift motion, he grabs the one and slams them head over heels deep into the sand.
"That’s what I think of your so-called authority on Alola. Which one of you morons is next?"
B - Readiness (Closed for Dark TRIAL)
The actual moment Shay was training for was at hand. While his Hawlucha as stoic about the matter, it clearly means a lot to the bird when they look up at their trainer with unease about the challenge and get a soothing pat on the head for it.
"Just stick to the plan. I know you have good instincts."
Wildcard!
Got something else in mind? Come at me!

A is for nice fist fighting
He drives around to the beach and is unsurprised to see some Overwatch goons looking at Shay. Wes rolls his eyes as he sees the pesky minions and parks his bike.
"Need help, Officer?"
Wes' tone is so deadpan, it's hard to tell whether he's cracking a joke to Shay or being serious.
no subject
Four goons down, with two more still standing. Not for long.
... Which would be even sooner if Wes suddenly decides to join in on the fun. The teen is well-practiced in keeping his eagle eyes on his opponent in any sort of fight after all, so while he doesn't reply to almost sounds like an invitation for a quip back, his gaze quickly flicks to Wes in silent acknowledgment.
But back to his situation at hand. "Still like your odds now?" he addresses to the remaining Overwatch thugs.
no subject
The gun is aimed at Wes but Wes rips it out of the man's hand. He knees the goon in the stomach before he throws him over to Shay's feet, as if leaving the Overwatch thug to Shay's mercy.
"Are you allowed to arrest them?" Wes asks as he makes sure the pack is down properly.
no subject
And thank goodness for that. Shay briefly checks over the two that Wes downed out of plain courtesy, the one with their torso plate dented by the augmented man's knee whimpering out that they're surrendering.
The teen doesn't have enough handcuffs for this, so tying them up will have to do.
Someone between the two of them should be the sort to have some rope handy.More than long enough for Shay to call for a police pickup and wait for them to get to the beach.no subject
"... Where did you learn how to fight?"
Because it was pretty damn impressive, Shay.
no subject
no subject
“Ah... you are very skilled considering. Thought you were military trained.”
And he can say so because he has fought the military.
no subject
"... I've had a long time to practice."
no subject
Shady Guy Wes has requested to spar!
no subject
"Rotom, keep an eye out for the pickup I asked for."
And then the teen slips off his badass coat. Because sure he can obviously fight fine in it, but any sliver of disadvantage he can avoid, the better.

After a small delay, letting Shun know that he was ready and waiting for a cue that Shun was, the man lunged with a swift jab to test the waters.
B - Readiness
But today, he was feeling kind of nasty, and that was fine with him.
"All right kid, I hear you're looking for a trial," he said, meeting Shay at the door. "Acerola said you were looking for me?"
no subject
"I heard you like to make your challenges interesting." He adds, not seeming at all to be worried... or cocky about all this. "And I'd like to get my team prepared for anything as soon as possible."
no subject
Yawning, he gestured to Shay to follow him towards the field nearby. "C'mon. We'll have our trial over here."
As he shuffled off, hands in his pockets, Nanu said, "You know, you Fallers have really done it this time. If it wasn't for that Ketchum kid bringing all sorts of craziness to this island, I wouldn't have thought twice about anything weird happening here. But when you lot started showing up, I wondered to myself what in the great hells was going on. So I decided to sit back and wonder to myself till I got a phone call from one of my old friends a few months ago."
Looking over his shoulder as a pack of Alolan Meowth and Persians followed behind him, he added, "Giovanni called me. Old running buddy of mine. You might know him as the leader of Team Rocket. Thought you'd might want to know. I got nothing to do with him these days, but he said he found something big. I might want a heads up. Last time he called me, he was looking into the Radiant One. This time, well, he said to come to Kanto. So I obliged a month ago. Tch. That guy."
no subject
Because Shay would find it hard to believe that aside from a few... outliers on the run, that the two Rocket gangs would somehow have opposing goals.
no subject
Nanu exhaled as he turned towards Shay. "Don't trust everything I say as gospel though kid. We dark type users are a tricky bunch, and we talk in half truths. Giovanni's a slippery man and everything he does is for furthering the goals of wealth and ambition. If he was trying to actually harm the world in a way that would cause the ruin of the planet, well, that's not profit. So whaddya say: 10 vs 1?"
no subject
But anyway. "Well if you're going that far, why not make it an even dozen?" Shay replies with a touch of sarcasm- but he really isn't flinching at this.
And if they weren't a bird, his Hawlucha beside him would be sweating buckets of anxiety. Because how dare their trainer put so much pressure on them like this.
Because it'll be good experience, totally.no subject
Turning around, hands in pockets, he gestured as the Alolan Meowth and Persian lined up, all 12 in a row. "You should be in for a treat son. There's not many who challenge like this. Gotta surpass the Champion? Then take all of these on at once."
no subject
"Show them what you're made of!"
But seriously, the teen really should give his other birds some focus after this trial. Especially with what his plans after getting just a bit stronger as a trainer.no subject
The first round charged forward, fury swipes at the ready but were swept by Hawlucha's counter attack of Brick Break which threw the group backwards. The second group charged in, aiming Dark Pulse at Hawlucha who flipped back from the explosions, but he shot forward like a cannon, aiming Brick Break to take out the group in a single slash.
The motion felled two groups as Bite raked across the ground as Aerial Ace clashed against the attacks and a huge explosion erupted across the ground as Hawlucha and three Persians clashed before slamming to the Brick Break, felling the group.
Landing, suddenly, Dark Pulse slammed right into Hawlucha again and again from all sides, knocking the bird to the ground, driving him to his knees. Nanu watched as his team hammered the Pokemon to the ground, who then exploded with an aoe Aerial Ace, knocking them to the tree-line. They however got up, and pulled themselves up, unlike the rest of their group.
3 vs 1. The last shot would determine the winner. HP was way down, and there was little time left.
"So kid, you're backed into a corner," said Nanu. "The sun is setting. Whatcha going to do, if you can't finish by the time it sets? You wanna try and beat me before the sun sets? Or end up in a disadvantage when the night falls?"
no subject
"And I've been there before, many times. But that was against foes that treated our struggle to survive as a game."
The teen looks toward his ace with pride. "So while this isn't a fight to live another day, it's still a fight to win...!"
In other words, as Hawlucha seems moved by that tease of their trainer's past, bring it.

"Flying Press!"
... that the bird can muster against the remaining three Persian.

In the silence of the aftermath, a young voice exclaimed, "All of Kahuna Nanu's Pokemon are unable to battle! Challenger Shay Obsidian wins!"
Nanu sighed. "Acerola...!"
Acerola grinned cheekily. "This is an official match Uncle Nanu!"
"I guess it is." Tossing a black ring at Shay, he said, "You did well kid. Here's a Z-ring for you, and a Z-Crystal for your Hawlucha. Fightinium-Z."
no subject
"Actually," Shay starts while trying to avoid the topic of how he already has a Fightinium Z unless explicitly asked. Though his expectations are certainly feeling very averted at this moment.
Hawlucha trods over as the teen pulls out from a pocket the crystal given to him by 'Rena' and properly continues with, "I already have that crystal. I just didn't have the means to use it."
no subject
"That's okay then!" Exclaimed Acerola as she hopped over, holding out a Z-Crystal for Shay to take. "This one's a Flyinium Z and you can use it once you learn something as well. I think if you learn something like Air Cutter or maybe even Brave Bird, it might work out."
no subject
"You got something for me?" he asked when Shay approached him in the bullpen.
no subject
"Figured these would be more useful for information after being taken apart than as they are."
no subject
He tapped the insignia on the inside. "This is Hammertech. My old friend Justin Hammer's in on this nonsense. I dunno where he managed to join up with these idiots but there's going to be hell to pay."
no subject
Including the plates in their possession.
"Which raises more questions really," Shay adds while pulling out a notepad and pen from one of his abundant pockets and scribbling a few more scattered notes down.
no subject
"Looks to me like he got a lot of help."
